Randy Carter's Biography:

Randall Carter is the Vice President of Organizational Development and Strategy for Planetree, a not for-profit healthcare organization founded in 1978, by a patient in San Francisco, California. The early goals of the organization remain at the heart of Planetree’s work today; to fundamentally change healthcare from a cold, sterile, intimidating experience to one of patient-empowerment, participation, choice and control.

Planetree’s Mission is to serve as a catalyst and partner in the development and implementation of new models of health care, which cultivate healing of mind-body-spirit; are patient-centered, value-based, and holistic, integrating the best of modern medicine with time honored healing practices and traditions.

From it’s beginnings in San Francisco, with the establishment of the first consumer oriented health resource center library, to the current diverse affiliate network of over 90 healthcare facilities worldwide, the vision of “higher ground in healthcare” continues to resonate with patients, families, healthcare providers and organizations.

Prior to joining Planetree full-time in February 2002, Mr. Carter served for 11 years as the Administrative Director of Organizational Development and Facilities, and Executive Management Team member at Mid-Columbia Medical Center, in The Dalles, Oregon. Mid-Columbia was the first system-wide implementation of the Planetree philosophy of care in the United States, beginning in 1991. Mr. Carter, in his roles in organizational development and facilities was a significant contributor in the successful integration of philosophy and practice in the organization. During his tenure at Mid-Columbia, the organization was recognized in numerous Healthcare periodicals as well as Bill Moyer’s landmark documentary series “Healing and the Mind”.

Mr. Carter has widely consulted and delivered programs on Patient Centered Care, Developing Healing Environments, Service, Leadership and Teamwork, to Healthcare organizations and Physician groups in addition to audiences in Building and Design, Retail, Software, Education, Broadcasting, Public Utilities and Government. Mr. Carter has contributed to the books “Turned On Organizations” and “Putting Patients First” (Jossey-Bass Publishing, 2003) which won the ACHE Hamilton Book of the Year Award in 2004.

Mr. Carter serves on the Advisory Boards of Oregon Regional Economic Development, Urban Renewal, Picker Dimension Expert Panel and the National Health Council’s Commission on “Putting Patients First”. Mr. Carter is an active member of the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, American Society of Training and Development and Society of Human Resource Management.
Randy and his wife Lori, their sons Jamison and Brycen reside in Oregon’s beautiful Columbia River Gorge.

Patrick A. Charmel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Griffin Hospital and its parent organization, Griffin Health Services Corporation, has been associated with Griffin since 1979, when he served as a student intern while attending Quinnipiac University.  After serving in a number of administrative positions, he became President in 1998. As President of Griffin Health Services Corporation, he is also the Chief Executive Officer of Planetree Inc., a subsidiary corporation. Planetree is a not-for-profit organization that supports an alliance of over 150 premier hospitals located across the United States and in the Netherlands, Canada, Brazil and Japan that are committed to patient empowerment and the delivery of patient centered care. 

During his tenure, he has positioned Griffin Hospital as an award-winning, innovative organization, recognized as an industry leader in providing personalized, humanistic, consumer-driven health care in a healing environment. Under his leadership, Griffin has appeared on the Fortune Magazine list of the 100 Best Companies to Work for in America for ten consecutive years. The Griffin Hospital management team was selected as the 2008 Top Leadership Team in Healthcare in the nation for community and mid-size hospitals by HealthLeaders Media. The hospital was also named as one of ten of America’s Healing Hospitals by the Journal of Sacred Work of the Baptist Trust in 2007 and 2008.

Related to quality of care, Griffin Hospital was named a 2007 Premier/CareScience National Quality Leader and received the 2009 HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence and HealthGrades 2009 Outstanding Patient Experience award.  Griffin was also a recipient of Total Benchmark Solution’s Top 100 Quality Award in 2006 and was named one of the Thompson 100 Top Performance Improvement Leader Hospitals in 2004.  Charmel is a co-author of the book “Putting Patients First” which received the American College of Healthcare Executive’s Health Care book of the year award in 2004. A second edition of the book was released in October 2008.

Griffin Hospital has been featured in four business books published recently: “Tribal Leadership – Leveraging Natural Groups to Build a Thriving Organization” (2008); Case Studies in Transparency – Real-World Ways for Marketers to Educate Consumers” (2008) “Fire Them Up” (2007);  “The Disney Way – Harnessing the Management Secrets of Disney in Your Company”.

In 2008, he completed a three year term as a member of the National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality to which he was appointed by the U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services.  He is Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Hospital Association and is a member of the Board of Directors of Qualidigm, a CMS contracted quality improvement organization. Charmel is Chair of the Board of Governors of the Quinnipiac University Alumni Association and a University Trustee.

In 2006 he was the recipient of the John D. Thompson Distinguished Visiting Fellow Award at Yale University.   Quinnipiac University honored him with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008. He is a recipient of the James E. West Fellow Award from the Boy Scouts of America.  He was inducted into the Junior Achievement Free Enterprise Hall of Fame in 2002, and he is a recipient of the Dean Avery Award given by the New London Day newspaper which recognizes an individual’s commitment to the public’s right to know.

After graduating from Quinnipiac University, Charmel received a Masters of Public Health degree from Yale University.  He currently lives in Hamden with his wife, Robyn and their son, Patrick.

Susan Frampton's Biography:

As the President of Planetree, a non-profit organization, Frampton works with a growing network of hospitals and health centers across the U.S., Canada and Europe that have implemented Planetree’s unique patient-centered model of care. Prior to her work with Planetree, she spent over twenty years at several hospitals in the New England area. Her work focused on community education, wellness and prevention, planning, and development of integrative medicine service lines. Frampton received both masters and doctoral degrees in medical anthropology from the University of Connecticut, and has numerous publications, including the edited collection “Putting Patients First” (Jossey-Bass Publishing, 2003) which won the ACHE Hamilton Book of the Year Award in 2004, chapters in Patient Advocacy for Health Care Quality (Jones & Bartlett Publishers, 2007) and articles and interviews in Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (2004), AHA News (2003), Modern Healthcare (2002), and Hospitals and Health Networks (2002). In addition to speaking widely on culture change, patient-centered design, and health care consumerism, Frampton has presented keynotes on designing patient-centered practices in primary care, continuing care, and ambulatory medicine settings for the MGMA, Healthcare Design Symposium, and Veterans Health Administration

As the Director of Design Consultation Services for Planetree, Ms. Montague works with a growing network of hospitals and health centers around the world to help improve their environments, in terms of the ten components for the Planetree Model of Care.  Prior to her work with Planetree, she spent over twenty years working as an architect in various capacities, and most recently as a Principal with Albert Kahn Associates, Inc., in Detroit, Michigan.  Her portfolio of work includes health care projects ranging from small community-based clinics, to large, urban and teaching hospitals, and her duties ranged from design to development and project management.  Her passion for both healing environments and environmentally friendly design is evidenced by her commitment to creating environments that appeal to all the senses, as well as promote health and wellness.  Nelson Montague received both bachelor of science and masters’ degrees in architecture from the University of Michigan and has participated in facilitating and presenting at several conferences, including the Annual Planetree Conference.
