What Affiliates Are Saying
“Enlightening, entertaining, fun, unbelievable – I thought there was no way we could make the changes that we did – it was amazing!”
“The nursing staff that participated in the LEAN event were very excited about having a voice in improving the medication administration process.”
Quote from Bill Hale, CEO, Carson Valley Medical Center
“I have high expectations for what LEAN can do for Carson Valley Medical Center. In theory, it serves as a way to improve quality, safety, patient and staff satisfaction, and financials. That’s a situation where everybody wins. The first department to go through the LEAN process was the Pharmacy and I was pleased with the results that came out of the initial Kaizen event. The fact that they found some significant costs savings to the hospital as well as made some patient safety and work-flow improvements show me that the return on this investment is substantial. If this first event is any indication, LEAN could be the key to our future success at Carson Valley Medical Center.”

Patient Satisfaction Assessment
Patients are more satisfied at Planetree hospitals
Top-performing hospitals for HCAHPS attribute success to a well-established culture of patient-centered care with comprehensive approaches to patient engagement, family involvement and staff involvement.
As a group, the Planetree Designated Patient-Centered Hospitals in the U.S. outperform the CMS national average in all ten of the publically reported HCAHPS categories, and on the CMS core measures.
Planetree hospitals are more highly recommended
A targeted, unit-based HCAHPS Assessment delves deeply into what prompts patients to score questions at certain levels. The assessment process includes focus groups and survey instrument data collection from hospital leadership, staff, medical staff, patients and families, HCAHPS data review, tours of hospital units, and presentation of interpreted results. Once factors are identified, Planetree works with hospitals to develop solutions that address areas patients express do not always meet their expectations.

At first blush, one recognizes that a healing environment would be aesthetically pleasing. Dig a little deeper and you come to realize that the physical space can be not only pleasing to the eye, but safe, efficient, supportive and intrinsically healing. It is a reflection of the community and is free of barriers, allowing for optimal healing for the patient; a supportive venue for the family and visitors; and a safe and effective work place for the staff.
During the early design phases of any project, facility leadership and planners often engage in detailed discussions about the future for the organization, most specifically related to physical attributes. It is the attention to cultural aspects that differentiates a Planetree facility from it’s competition, so much so, that one health system leader remarked during a tour that it “just felt different.”
Planetree’s Design Consultation services were created to bridge the gap between physical attributes and cultural behaviors or actions, and concurrently working to integrate strategic initiatives and clinical operations. While this may seem a daunting task, the following services provide a road map that can assist an organization in their own creation of Healing Design Standards, specific to their organization’s mission, vision and values. The method for creating a holistic approach for the physical space involves a clear understanding of your strategic facility plan and its impact on your organization’s culture along with a commitment to evidence-based design principles in order to optimize outcomes.
- How do you want to be perceived by the public and your community?
- Is the facility a barrier to optimize your success as a health care organization?
- Are we respecting the privacy of our patients in our facility?
- Have we supported our staff members to do their best work?
The healing environment is the stage upon which each and every interaction in your facility is played; why not dedicate yourselves to making that stage an optimal place for learning, sharing and healing?
